Early Years
The Early Years team looks after the Reception classes, and years 1 & 2
|
All children have a home reading book, which is to be read
with parents, a few pages each night. These books will be from a
variety of schemes. An LSA will check each day
to determine if the book needs changing. These books will also
be read once a week to a teacher or LSA, apart from reception,
who will read daily. In class, the literacy hour lasts for
approx. 1hour 30 minutes and consists of;
 | · Whole class reading and discussion of story or passage |
 | · Sound work, focusing on 1 particular sound or word
family |
 | · Punctuation and grammar |
The children will then have a writing activity, connected to
the text and will also spend about 15/20 minutes on group
reading, using the ORT scheme. This activity is teacher led and
involves intense teaching of reading. The children discuss the
story and the characters. They predict and retell the story in
their own words. They use different cues and strategies to help
them with unfamiliar text. The session ends with a plenary,
establishing the main learning objectives of the lesson and
ensuring they have been understood.
